POKOTABI / Shochikuan
松竹庵 人形町支店
Shochikuan is a cherished Ningyocho spot known for its chicken and grated daikon seiro, chilled zaru soba, flavorful hot broths, and soba-mae snacks like itawasa and grilled duck.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
In the historic, down-to-earth neighborhood of Ningyocho, Shochikuan is a classic refuge when you crave cold, crisp soba without fuss. At lunchtime, many regulars gravitate toward the tori oroshi seiro, a cold buckwheat noodle set accompanied by tender chicken and a gentle dipping broth laced with grated daikon radish. It offers a mellow, comforting flavor that settles easily into a workday break. At the end of the meal, you can dilute the leftover dipping sauce with hot buckwheat water (sobayu) and finish every last drop with a touch of wasabi.
If you prefer to appreciate the pure snap of the noodles, the thoroughly chilled zaru soba is a dependable standard. The cold menu also extends to choices like goma soba, enriched with nutty toasted sesame, alongside reliable favorites featuring grated yam or fermented natto. Those after heartier fare will find tempura soba and ten seiro with shrimp tempura set against a restrained, traditional Edo-style broth, warming niku nanban on colder days, or breaded pork katsu don over rice.
Beyond hearty lunches, the restaurant lends itself wonderfully to soba-mae—the traditional pleasure of lingering over appetizers and drinks before finishing with noodles. Guests can pair bottled beer or soba shochu with thick-cut itawasa fish cake from Suzuhiro, assorted tempura, katsuni simmered cutlets, or deeply seasoned grilled duck sprinkled with fragrant sansho pepper or shichimi. Note that payments are cash only, so keep notes or coins on hand when stopping by.
